Our mission is to help young couples build awareness of their own and each other’s emotional reactions, suggest short term and long term solutions toward a better romantic relationship.

The Discovery

Love has always been a tough topic, especially for young people. The Hongkong federation of youth groups interviewed over 3000 people in relationships between 13-23. Most of them argue with their partners 1-3 times a month. The top three most common sources from which interviewees acquire concepts about relationships are their friends, the internet, and teachers

General Idea

At its core, Waves is an interactive visual novel. The whole system includes a hologram bottle for each partner and the application. The bottle detects emotion changes in the user and visualizes it holographically. It can also receive hologram activities. For example, meditation and storytelling mini-games. The app displays emotional changes of both partners and supports mini-games and exercises, virtual rewards, and personalization options.

Metaphor

Our app metaphors have an overarching marine theme - the island represents the user and the user's partner, the tide represents emotional connection, and each island's weather represents each user’s emotions. The hologram device is a drifting bottle.

According to the communication problem, we will suggest suitable solutions for both users.

The Creative Solution

We hope to help users first understand the underlying communication issue, then slowly offer steps to resolve the problem, learn acceptance, and improve self wellbeing. Based on psychology sources, we devised 4-step solutions for 4 different romantic relationship communication problems. Based on 4 broad communication problem categories, our system will provide suitable tasks for the users.
