The Queen of Spades
"The Queen of Spades" at the Goncharov-Philippov mansion is the first classical opera in an immersive format. Here, guests first undergo a rite of sacramental initiation and then may be seated directly at the playing table or invited into the bedroom of the Queen of Spades. Each performance involves 70 performers and two conductors, one directing the orchestra and the other the soloists scattered throughout the 10 rooms of the house. The guests of the opera are involuntarily drawn into the action, as Hermann goes crazy right at their feet, and the opera singers perform their parts at arm's length! In one of the casts, Hermann is played by Pyotr Nalich.
As conceived by director Alexander Legchakov and set designer Polina Bakhtina, every object in the space breathes, and every shadow is filled with meaning. Among the scenery, which takes you into the magical world of Pushkin, you can see "live" portraits of the Countess and Saint-Germain, made in the tradition of Robert Wilson.
