Forgotten was a year-long project centered around my senior research topic: ending the sexual assault evidence kit backlog.
Clock Project

Our first assignment for this project was to create a clock that represented why our chosen topic was an important social issue. The clock face to the right is made of layered acrylic disks with three levels of cut paper boxes to represent the varying lengths of time each kit waits to be tested. With 300 total paper boxes across the three levels and each paper box representing 500 untested kits there are roughly 150,000 untested kits in America. Though this number is constantly changing as states count and test their backlogs.
The most important information should be stored simply

The next big part of this project was to create a campaign focused on spreading awareness for our topic. My campaign focused heavily on the clerical aspect of the SAEKs, or Sexual Assault Evidence Kits, because one of the biggest problems of the backlog is that many kits get lost. My goal was to create a uniform box and tracking system (below) in order to prevent confusion when filling out the forms and make it easier to find the boxes once they were in storage. The box features an RFID tag that would make tracking the boxes much quicker and can be upgraded to provide information on ambient climate in order to protect the evidence in extreme climates.
Once the kit has been sealed, authorities can enter its information into the tracking system which focuses on giving the survivor options on how they want to be notified about their kit. After I finished the box and tracking system, I moved on to creating a campaign to promote the system to my audience: law enforcement. I created a website, magazine ads, a brochure for law enforcement trade shows, and email blasts.

Evidence without Justice

The final part of this project was to create an exhibit centered around our topic in order to increase awareness. This was a particularly challenging project for a couple reasons. First, choosing what pieces of the topic to focus on was hard. Every detail felt equally as important, but I decided to focus on the size of the backlog and the contents of an actual Sexual Assault Evidence Kit in order to show how difficult the process of a SAEK is. The second thing that made this difficult was the fact that I had one shot to make the final product work and I was using a lot of materials that I had never worked with on such a large scale before. I had to really work on the fly and adapt to things I couldn’t change. For example, the printers weren’t able to print the map on vinyl and my back up plan of a large sticker also didn’t workout so I had to work quickly to figure out a third option where I printed the map out myself and cut it by hand.
