User-Centred Design for the Teenagers in Single-Parent Family

The Discovery

Have you ever experience your parent's death or divorce when you are studying in middle school? More than half of the teenagers that are living in a public house or rental house as a single-parent family in Hong Kong. These family are the second big poverty group for asking the government for the Comprehensive Social 
Security Assistance. 

These teenagers might need to face lots of challenges such as studying, family argument and peer pressure. However, most of them might not share their mental suffering with others in the first few months. These might affect their future with "deviant behaviour" such as taking drugs, participating in Triad as some extreme cases. 


The Creative Solution​​​​​​​

We hope the design with the school promotion, social media and souvenirs can help the teenagers relieving their negative emotion and trigging their thoughts through the concepts of “searching help”, “sharing thoughts” as well as  "separating the attention" after becoming the teenagers in a single-parent family.
Concept​

​Through the research, we conclude the research and the interview for the “3S” that relieve their emotion.
Characters 

All the design and the story are started by the sketches. I just sketch the character for the Youtube channel. Each of the characters might be based on the features of the single-parent family in middle school such as underprivileged groups, independent, low education level as well as a misunderstanding with their parent.   
Logotype
The name is called “丹尼爾講單離異” in Cantonese and “Daniel Talks with the Teenagers in a Single-Parent Family” in English. I make this name because The pronunciation of Daniel is similar to the circumstance of the single-parent family in Cantonese. Therefore, people might easy to remember the character and the meaning at the same time.
Poster
As for the poster, there are three sets of posters with the big QR code that linkage to the video. Each of the videos might have a different story. The big QR code can trigger people to scan it. Also, the style of QR code matches the QR code that linkage to the video. Each of the videos might have a different story. The big QR code can trigger people to scan it. Also, the style of QR code matches the theme of cyberpunk with the colour and the graphic. There is a different pose in the poster between Daniel with other characters. The poster might display in the school for the NGO promotion with the Youtuber. It might also display on the street for more people aware and improve the awareness of the problem easily compare with the original poster of the Caritas Family Crisis Support Centre. We also might sell the picture as a collection for the people in the school promotion.

I use the 3d style that matches with the cyberpunk colour scheme for the video. The 3d character and scene might attract our target audience easily with the details physical scene and rigging of the character.

The props design is related to the concept of searching and connection of the Youtube video. It seems like the installation and sits for people in the promotion. The searching and playing icon represents our video and channel. It also can remind people of the concept of searching, separating and sharing.

The guideline is one of the prizes that telling all the methods of the design and concept that can help our target audience. It also shows the character background and their characteristics for people to understand more

These stationary set can help our target audience for their studying and living.Since their family is underprivileged and low income.It is good to become a prize through the promotion.The design of this stationary based on our main character Daniel with the funny facial expression.It represents we hope our target audience can think more positive after watching the video.​​​​​​​

It just a board that mention the aim of our promotion with the large size and details of the pictures and films. Since there are lots of details for the scene and facial expression. We don’t hope to show it on the video only.

The Promotional Flow​
Since our target audience is studying in school therefore we might make a school promotion for the flow for the art direction.

The promotion set on the corridor since the corridor is a good direction that watches all the things and no need to big frames for making space.

Our target audience might easy to attract by the seats and the lighting.

As for the poster, not only the school students, people might curios and scan the QR code for watching the video easily compare with the original poster of the Caritas Family Crisis Support Centre.​​​​​​​
User Journey with design items
 
1.our target audience goes back to the school sadly and goes to the cover playground for waiting for the lesson.

2. Then, he sees the eye-catching poster with the curious and read the contents.
3. He follows the step and scans the QR code with hopeful.
4. He watches the video seriously and feels in touch.
5. He finishes watching the video and follows watch the description of the video cheerfully. At the same time, he follows the step and watches the suggestions video of the single-parent family.
6. He feels better after watching the same experience video, he tries to leave the comments and thanks for the video.
7. He sees the description and understands there is the lucky draw with prizes, therefore, he answers the questions of “what time does Daniel’s booklet appears in the 3d world?” And answer the time on the comment frame.
8. He finally got the guideline of the single-parent family through the promotion staff.He also talks with his experience to the staff from Caritas Family Crisis Support Centre.The guideline has lots of methods for relieving his negative emotion.
9.He also shares the video with his reliable friend and feels more positive.


I found two people for the user test and they try to follow the step that I try to
shadow them.

One user called Jeremy.He forms 3 students in a single-parent family.He thinks that the method especially the QR code can trigger people attention compare to the normal poster of social association.He also thinks the message is clear compare with the tradition poster.The graphic is good.If the graphic can make more stimulation that might better.The promotion can trigger the target audience for following the method of relieving the pressure.It is more convenient than finding the social worker in school for asking for help with the nickname account.You also can ask the hotline and send the email to the NGO for help easily through the description.
The other user called Jason, he also the target audience that he thinks the colour is sharp and eye-catching.The method of QR cod also easy to draw people attention to scanning and watch the video.The message is clear, the conversation brought him the message.The graphic is good but it might be too cute.He loves more realistic and details character and graphics.He thinks the comments frame and the lucky draw are useful.
Next Step

Through the process and the comments through the user, the design system is positive.Although they might not love the graphics style since our users are male.The female user might love the style since it is “cute” as the user said.Yet, overall our target audience quite agrees with the channel for help compare with the traditional poster of our NGO.It might trigger them for watching with the big QR code and related topic in their life.It is good to upload the video for the Youtube channel.The NGO can help more people through the innovative way of watching the video and leaving the comments.Moreover, it can also arouse public attention if the poster on the public.However, the channel manager might need to consider the comments.It is good to find the NGO people for mange the account like the 24 hotlines since there is the function of arousing the manager read the comments as Daniel’s Channel user.
