National Museum of Mexican Art

National Museum of Mexican Art

While the NMMA's presence has grown since its opening in 1987, the NMMA remains true to their mission: To stimulate knowledge and appreciation of Mexican art and culture from both sides of the border through a significant permanent collection of Mexican art, rich visual and performing arts programs, high quality arts education programs and resources and professional development of Mexican artists. The Museum welcomes all people and strives to foster a world where all are included.

Rebrand Strategy

A lot of what the museum does involves the youth of the community in Chicago. The goal is to create a brand that is visually intriguing to all age demographics while maintaining its heritage and foundation. The concept is to capture a more lively and festive aesthetic. This is done through the use of bright colors and strong geometric patterning influenced by traditional Mexican textile art.

Research & Inspiration
From my research I noticed a recurring theme that many Mexican artworks incorporated strong geometric patterning. I began to collect images of Mexican textiles for inspiration along with other Mexican art works. As I began sketching and pulling ideas from my inspiration board, I noticed the most potential in the endless possibilities of using textile patterns, and came up with over 150 sketches. Out of my many sketches I picked out my top three variations and began to render them digitally.

Result

I chose this variation because it captures the rich festive aesthetic I was aiming for while creating an abstract landscape of Mexico. I paired this mark with Aqua Grotesque because the fonts geometric structure compliments the logo well.
