SHAPE OF GESTURE | concept
SHAPE OF GESTURE is an experimental design, which attempts to capture the casual gestures used in our daily life, and combine them with the interaction of products.
When we try to catch an object, at the moment our brains begin to think how to use our fingers, our hands have already found a comfortable way to grasp it. Hands think faster than brains.
Compared to the traditional interafaces (pressing a button), the project take "touch" as an important parameter, redesign the product interaction from the perspective of casual gestures, which is regarded as the most intuitive, in our body embedded language, and has been used unconsciously numerous times in our daily routines. SHAPE OF GESTURE provides more tangible interactions, which reduces the learning costs, gives instant tactile feedback and enriches the user experience. Meanwhile, it starts a new consistent interaction logic, which is not attached to one individual product but can be applied for products.
In this project, eight gesture-operation modules are defined as the interaction principles. Three products are designed to show how these principles guide further product design.
CASUAL GESTURES | research
The objects surrounding us constantly inspire our sensory perceptions. By using our senses we discover the affordance existed in our environment and take the intuitive reaction to them. In order to find as many potential casual gestures as possible, we conducted an experiment and recorded the behaviors of the participants.
In the experiment we gave the participants different kinds of basic forms as triggers, which could simulate our complex daily environment. In the environment with rich affordance, the participants played with these forms, be unconsciously inspired.
GESTURE MODULES | prototype
After the experiments, eight gesture-operation modules are designed as the gesture principles, which include the twelve most universal operations, which are selected according to the usage frequency of the current home appliances.
PRODUCT DESIGN | transform
Three products(a wireless-speaker, a humidfier and a table lamp) are designed with the guidance of the gesture modules to visualize the potential of the gesture interaction.
