A project that stemmed from wanting to design within the kitchen space, made me question what really goes on behind the scenes in a commercial kitchen, which led me to my first topic: Kitchen tools as weapons. An involuntary form of violence led me to think about voluntary death. Modern technology is a tool which is legally used to prolong one’s life, but why is it still illegal to end someone’s suffering? Euthanasia, is a beautiful act, it’s a celebration of one’s life, it’s the end, but it does not need to be painful, it does not always have to be so technical.
Inspired by the scientist, David Goodall, who at the age of Hundred and four, opted for Euthanasia, mainly because he thought he had lived a good life and did not wish to live anymore. This five course meal, is designed around the process of Euthanasia, with each form of cutlery infused with the dosages of the medicines taken to end one’s life. It’s an experience till the very end. Inspired by the five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance), the five-course meal evokes emotion, makes you reflect on the life you’ve led, and let’s you celebrate every moment, including the present with its meals and carefully designed cutlery.
