The Glitch Mob - We Can Make The World Stop (Official Video)

Shortly after seeing the passion project music video I made for their song "Can't Kill Us," The Glitch Mob asked me to make an official visual for the ten year anniversary re-release of their 3 song EP We Can Make The World Stop. The video needed to be a seamless loop that would play throughout the entire 13 minute duration of the EP. They wanted me to take the album artwork which is a large snake laying in the grand canyon and bring it to life. I decided to have the loop change in subtle ways for each of the three tracks. The first track has the snake slithering through the canyon as shown on the album cover. The second track sounded more colorful to me so I made the snake shift in hue throughout the duration of the track. And the third track is more of a downtempo after-hours sounding song, So I had the sun go down and created a cooler, more relaxing night time scene. The Glitch Mob is one of my all-time favorite artists and is what got me listening to electronic music and eventually what made me want to learn 3D and motion design, so working on something official for them was one of the coolest experiences for me! I hope you enjoy it!

Behind the Scenes
I used world creator to custom make the canyon environment. The video needed to loop infinitely for 13 minutes so it had to be a seamless tileable landscape. The camera was going to be from the perspective of a drone, however it would dip closer to the canyon at points so I had to make the landscape and it's texture maps extremely detailed and high-poly so that it's fidelity would hold up for close ups.
After rendering the main portion and playing back my animation, something just didn't feel right. We realized a snake that large would be kicking up lots of dust and probably shaking the canyon walls enough to make rocks and debris fall down. So I went in to X-particles and did a few simple debris and dust simulations that I then composited into my scene. The effect is subtle, but it definitely helps sell the scale of the snake. Additionally I added tiny flocks of birds every once in a while to show the scale as well.
