Sélavy Magazine
Indie Biannual Editorial Spotlighting Creatives & Activists
Established in 2020, the namesake is an indie biannual editorial publication of Ashley Robinson's creation. Through interviews with activists and creatives in all disciplines, she is able to share career origin stories through prose and the curation of visuals. Within this storytelling endeavor, those featured are able to connect with one another, exchanging advice, posing questions, and setting the foundation for future collaborations in a fresh and inviting way.
In an industry saturated with images perpetuating toxic ideals of beauty, gender, lifestyle, success, and consumerism, Ashley felt it necessary to forge a new path. With the flexibility of an independent publication, she understands the freedom she holds to promote inclusivity, spread insight, and incite the imagination. All published material, from articles to photo spreads, is devoid of stereotypes and archetypes, rejecting capitalist notions of the things which divide us: gender identity, sexual orientation, body type, race, religion, age, job title, and socioeconomic status. The most significant measure she has developed to ensure her readers feel acknowledged and secure is to open each issue first with a positive affirmation to reinforce self-worth. She is wholly committed to featuring creatives and activists at all stages of their craft, from students to seasoned professionals, to both offer advice and ponder burning questions.
This publication operates with clear intention to...
〰️ Exhibit the ideology of feminism at work for every being.
〰️ Share the truths of each individual we spotlight in a multifaceted manner.
〰️ Re-work the narrative of careers to that of contentment in one’s process.
〰️ Curate both relevant and evergreen topics.
〰️ Experiment with six degrees of separation.
〰️ Engage in constant and considerate conversation with the reader.
The tagline for this publication is Feminism for Equity, Duality in Harmony. When we create safe spaces for women, for womxn, for womyn, it is a triumph in the face of adversity. That the concept and the practice of feminism are to deliver equity, as if a middle finger to oppression. I say only when done under the banner of inclusion. Should we not all coexist? And exist in such a way that draws no hard lines in the sand? I am me. You are you. We are separate beings? No. Within us, exists both feminine and masculine energy. Vulnerability, compassion, confidence, ownership. To cut one off from the other is a dismemberment of the soul. Parisian Dada artist, Marcel Duchamp, expressed his inner femininity in the form of an alter ego before the lens of Man Ray. She was Rrose Sélavy. A sly play on words linguistically combining the god Eros, son of almighty Aphrodite, and the bittersweet motto of a phrase that is c’est la vie. Such. Is. Life.
