The death of the author, as the sole holder of a monopoly on meaning, was stated by Roland Bart in his essay of the same name in 1967. The author is eliminated to enable the viewer, reader, listener to find their own interpretation. Any work becomes ambiguous. Freedom from the dictatorship of the author gives rise to a polyphony of meanings.
