Typography images depict images by arranging characters. Through the conscious use of
characters their meaning or form can be viewed. Thus additional information is
communicated. Typography images apply to art, mass media and literature.

To design generative typography images based on greyscale images algorithms were
developed and implemented. While generating the typography image the user of the application has immediate influence on the designed image. The depictions can be combined and the user is able to change the settings of the displayed characters. Additional characters can be assigned to the typography image. Due to editing individual typography images are formed.

The application "EdiTy – Editable Typography Images" was developed in Processing. Three styles of typography images can be choosen and an individual image can be drawn. Letters can be manipulated and the styles can be combined. The current interface is preliminary.
Before transforming your image into a typography image the final size has to be defined and colour channels can be balanced to create a greyscale image, if necessary.
Further optional adjustments and filters include transparency, blurring, posterisation, threshold operations as well as inversion.
Going from pixels to characters
Grid based the resolution of the original image is reduced and characters are distributed. The size of characters is defined by their grey level.
Grey levels define which characters are used. Since they can be assigned to each level they need not represent their actual grey value.
A Threshold defines in which parts of the image characters are placed. This style depends largely on preprocessing. For examle, a Laplace filtration can help to maintain details as fine lines.
Editability of all characters allows users to create individual typography images not only by choosing styles and parameters. New characters as well as lines of characters can be drawn, existing characters can be manipulated or deleted by users. Thanks to an object based representation of the characters their properties can be manipulated. These include font, size, location and orientation.
