Continuation of the story about the sights of Kharkov. Part 2 will show modern and historical monuments.
Pokrovsky Cathedral
There are many Orthodox sights in Kharkov, but the main of them is considered Pokrovsky Cathedral, which is located on Universitetskaya Street and belongs to the Holy Pokrovsky Monastery of the same name. The monastery, built at the end of the 17th century, is one of the oldest surviving stone buildings in modern Kharkov. Over its three hundred year history, the Intercession Cathedral in Kharkov has seen a lot. There were significant events in it, and very sad pages.
Assumption Cathedral
The Assumption Cathedral is one of the most visited Orthodox sights of Kharkov. The temple rises in the city center, at the intersection of Universitetskaya and Kvitki-Osnovyanenko streets. According to historians, the cathedral was built in the middle of the 17th century. Thanks to the large bell tower, the monastery has long been considered the tallest building in Kharkov. Only after the construction of modern multi-story buildings in the city (in 2006) did the temple lose this status.
House of State Industry
The House of State Industry is located on the main square of Kharkov - Freedom Square. Past this building, built back in the late 1920s. last century, it is impossible to go through today. Everyone who sees the Gosprom for the first time is impressed not only by its gigantic dimensions, but also by its architectural style. If you look at history, you can find out that the House of State Industry in Soviet times was the largest construction project, which, incidentally, was completed in record time.
Kharkov Dolphinarium
After active walks in the sights of Kharkov, it's time to take a break and recharge with new emotions. And you can do this if you look into the Nemo Dolphinarium, on 35 Sumskaya Street. Tourists are welcome here at any time of the year and are ready to surprise visitors of any age. In the Kharkov dolphinarium (which, incidentally, is considered one of the largest in the CIS), dolphins, fur seals, white whales and sea lions live. Charming animals are trained a lot (they even sing and dance) and are happy to show their talents to the public during performances.
Kharkov Maritime Museum
Maritime Museum in a land city - similar to nonsense. However, there is an explanation for this fact: the basis of the exhibition was the private collection of Alexander Yakimenko, a man who loves the sea. And as you know, nothing can stop a person who is passionate about his passion.
The museum is dedicated to the history of shipbuilding and navigation. Here are exact copies of famous sailing ships and ships. For example, the Bounty is a British ship on which the rebellion began. The captain and part of the crew were landed on a desert island, but they were able to survive and get home.
Kharkov Opera and Ballet Theater named after Nikolai Lysenko
The National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater named after Nikolai Lysenko is one of the leading theaters not only in Kharkov, but, perhaps, throughout Ukraine. Today, this cultural institution is located on Sumskaya Street, opposite the other famous Kharkov landmark - the Mirror Stream fountain complex. From the history of the theater it is known that it was formed at the end of the 19th century, although opera performances and enterprises in the musical theater were set earlier.
