by Mário de Sá-Carneiro (1890 — 1916)
One of the greatest Portuguese poets, one of the exponents of modernism in Portugal and one of the most reputable D'Orpheu Generation member.

DISPERSÃO was this author's first poetry book.
Written between february and march of 1913, it contains 12 poems:
Partida · Escavação · Inter-Sonho · Álcool · Vontade de dormir · Dispersão · Estátua Falsa · Quási · Como Eu Não Possuo · Além-Tédio · Rodopio · A Queda.
-
Just by its title, the book shows the author's scattered side, the lack of concentration and his inner conflicts, predicting his already tragic life end.
In those twelve poems, Mário de Sá Carneiro searches for the unachievable ideal, a world of dreams, the only place where he feels good.

Side-by-Side with Fernando Pessoa, Mário de Sá-Carneiro changed Portugal's modernism.
The Lisbonet poet wrote beautiful pieces about the existence between two worlds - the real world and his own inner world - and about the search for happiness - or the absence of sadness - within the soul labirint.

Born in Lisbon in 1890, Sá-Carneiro became motherless around the age of 2. Due to his bohemian father, the young boy was cared for by his grandparents, leading to a spoiled and obese growing, as well as socialization and relationship disabilities, mainly regarding women.
He began his writing career in high-school, sided by his friend Tomás Cabreira Jr., whom comitted suicide at the school yard in front of all of their friends and teachers, marking him for life.
Torn apart by the idea of his friend's suicide, Sá-Carneiro ended committing is own at a Parisian hotel room, at the age of 25, in 1916.
Both his books characters and his poetry lyrics, are representations of multiple personalities, as if they were searching for another "self" within themselves, resembling Fernando Pessoa's experiences. The difference between them being that Fernando Pessoa had heteronyms and wrote the way he did, so he could avoid crazyness and suicide.
