Spiritism is a loose corpus of religious faiths having in common the general belief in the survival of a spirit after death. The fundamental principles of Spiritism are, a belief in the existence of spirits (non-physical beings) that live in the invisible or spirit world and the possibility of communication between these spirits and living people through mediumship.
Ectoplasm (from the Greek ektos, meaning "outside", and plasma, meaning "something formed or molded") is said to be produced by physical mediums when in a trance state. This material is excreted as a gauze-like substance from orifices on the medium's body and spiritual entities are said to drape this substance over their nonphysical body, enabling them to interact in our physical universe.
