This topic aims at bringing Man in contact with the sea and providing him with the opportunity to exceed his standard limits. A spectacularly beautiful location is selected for the diving centre facilities, of a cosmic scale and with a particularly strong and dynamic character –Alaties, located in the northwest of Kefalonia. A peninsula –a strip of land invading the sea- is transformed into a “forward zone” of the human existence in nature. This intervention comes to complement the location and make it habitable. It is governed at all levels by a "fit to paper" logic, from start to finish. The synthesis is developed in a way that is adapted and adaptable to the location. The main element of the complex is the "mast" –a cylinder with a 2 m diameter and 28 m high. Its concept was based on the “vardiola” –the name of both the Venetian watch-tower closeby and the crow’s nest at the top of the mast in old sailing ships. Thus, the vertical movement with the platforms leading to the sea and the final union with the location by diving into it refers to the form of the mast with its yards. At the mast's ends, one’s existence becomes immaterial: at the top one merges with the air and at the bottom with the water. At the same time it symbolizes the vertical movement of diving. Three buildings - one for each function (diving, recreation, accommodation) - forming a triangle, with the three vertices cut off, create an enclosed plan and an inner yard. An enclosed plan because this is what the location lacks. And in the midst of all that, an enclosed shelter is added, where one can experience the human scale, feel protected and define their existence, by visually defining the surrounding area. Through an initiation process, the user comes to be reconciled, connected and ultimately united with the location. First, one stands "inside", feeling safe and watching from a distance. Then, one comes out on the "mast" and is overwhelmed by the location. Finally, one dives and becomes one with the location. Read Less
