Entrepreneur Dr. Ehsan Bayat has transformed Afghanistan’s future through his efforts in the areas of communications, education, health care, social justice, and economic prosperity. A U.S. citizen, Dr. Ehsan Bayat left his homeland of Afghanistan when the Russians invaded in December 1979. He found considerable business success in the United States and returned to Afghanistan two decades later, following the fall of the Taliban regime and lifting of U.S. sanctions. As he worked to rebuild the nation, he became the largest private American investor in its history.

A graduate of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology, Dr. Ehsan Bayat founded Telephone Systems International in 1998 to facilitate the establishment of a mobile telephone system in Afghanistan. Afghan Wireless Communication Company, launched in 2002 as a joint venture with the Afghan Ministry of Communications, provides Internet and cellular services to more than 3 million subscribers in every province. In 2005, Dr. Ehsan Bayat founded Ariana Television Network, the country’s largest TV and radio broadcaster. Reaching more than 25 million Afghans, the programming, in English, Dari, Tajik, and Pashtu, provides news and education-based content such as computer training, children’s shows, and programs addressing health and women’s issues.

Focusing also on humanitarian efforts, Dr. Ehsan Bayat established the Bayat Foundation to assist Afghans in reaching their full potential. The organization awards Empowering Women Grants and educates citizens on everything from personal hygiene to respect for elders and youth. The foundation also supports pregnant mother and newborn care, sports, access to clean water, and education. Recently, the American University of Afghanistan broke ground on the Bayat ICT Building, a $3 million project, and awarded Dr. Ehsan Bayat an honorary Doctor of Philosophy. The businessman has received numerous other accolades, including the Mahatma Gandhi Humanitarian Award, bestowed in 2010. Read Less
