Emrah Altınok (born 22 Sep. 1980 in Ağrı-Turkey) is an artist, author and university professor. He has been working as an Asst. Prof. at Istanbul Bilgi University Department of Architecture since he received his PhD from Yıldız Technical University in the field of urban political economy in 2012.
As a fine-art photographer, he specializes in portrait photography. He took portraits of 180 people including Turkish celebrities during the international photography project of 'Facity' in 2010. He has been featured in several of worldwide magazines including Hurriyet Pazar, XOXO the Mag, 46, Babylon, JPG, Default, Yeah Magazines and has staged numerous exhibitions. His latest work will be exhibited in MAXXI (Museum of XXI. Century Arts) in December 2015 as part of the exhibition "İstanbul: Passion, Joy, Fury" biscurated by Hou Hanru with a team of international curators. Altınok gave speeches and led a couple of workshops in several universities. In addition, he has been giving the course 'Photography for Designers' in İstanbul Bilgi University since 2012.
Beside photography, he has three books of poetry published and three poetry awards. He led the personal fanzine project 'gak' by using the name 'Franko Buskas' as a pseudonym between 2007 and 2008. Some critics found his art published in 'gak' during this nearly two years’ time as a reflection of an innovative and avant-garde attitude. In early volumes of the fanzine, the inscriptions of 'the blast' that look like drawing and handwriting evoked some works of Roland Barthes and Henri Michaux appeared with 'the voices', accompanying audio recordings made by him that were more of like audio poems of a delirious mind. In 2008, he made a couple of stencils (proactive poetry) which had significance on bringing poetry to the streets and provided new poetic collective experiences. In 2010, one of the most distinguished publishing companies of Turkey, 'Norgunk' published his book 'çöt mendime görsektimi vuru?'.
Altınok attended MQ Quartier21 Artists-in-Residence Program in Vienna, during a month in the summer of 2013, as the guest of the Austrian Foreign Ministry. During his stay, he wrote a novella 'A truth in Karlsplatz' which is published in German ('Eine Wahrheit am Karlsplatz', translated by Sara Heigl) within the book 'Aus allen Richtungen: Karlsplatzierungen' (Ed: Elena Messner, Eva Schörkhuber) by 'Sonderzahl' in 2014.
Altınok is also keen on music. He is the founder of a psychedelic rock band 'etreh' which has been making improvisational psychedelic rock music since 2005. Their sound is along the lines of a swooning, passing out musical intervention, and is more about mood and atmosphere than virtuosity or complexity. Read Less
