The focus of my work is to explore the blurring of boundaries between the physical (known) and the non-physical (unknown) elements of life.

Through the teachings of eastern philosophies such as Buddhism, Chinese Taoism and the aesthetics and values behind the Japanese principle of wabi-sabi my work explores the play between our conscious and unconscious mind and richness which lies beneath.

The process of expanding this awareness can be done in many ways. One method is through the practice of meditation.

Through my own personal daily meditative practice in combination with regular silent meditation retreats I am exploring an internal journey, which I have visually recorded.

I have done this through the photography of organic forms to help understand the transformations that have taken place both in how I view myself and how I perceive the world around me.

The title “Surface Tension” comes from the realisation that so much of my life has been spent on a surface layer. Once I learnt to let go of the tension in myself through the refining of my senses, I passed below this surface tension and into the richness of a dimension of life that was previously unknown to me.

“To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders.”
Lao Tzu

1. Wabi-Sabi: A Japanese world view or aesthetic centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete, a wisdom in natural simplicity.
