I was accepted into a study abroad program with an established Marine research organization in South Africa. The majority of my time was spent working hands on with a world class team of Scientist, Oceanographers, and Mariners on project Great White Shark. My daily tasks included tagging, bait roping, photographing, chumming, and identifying individual great white sharks, preparations for daily chum trips, boat repairs and maintenance, aquarium upkeep, local community education and outreach programs and data collecting.

Most of the work was hands on, gritty and smelling of fish guts. Regardless it was an opportunity of a life time.

The research they are harvesting is interdisciplinary ranging from biological to the socio-economic study of marine resource utilization in Africa's coastal society. Oceans Research specializes in investigating the biology of the marine ecosystem, including sharks, rays, marine mammals and turtles, so they can better advise governmental and non-governmental industry on relevant conservation issues.
