Hey there! Thanks for popping by.

My name is Chris Maclean (though you probably guessed that) and I'm Executive Creative Director for Interbrand Australia. I'm also a designer, writer, photographer, problem solver, thinker, and technology geek. Yep, that probably sums it up.

This website is predominantly about my exploits as a designer, so please feel free to have a wander around and see what I've been up to in my 11 years in this industry. You'll also find a link to my photography portfolio, which is my other true love.

I haven't always been a brand designer though. After graduation from the University of Nothumbria at Newcastle in 2001, I started my career at The Chase in Manchester, England. I spent five years learning to design from some amazing people — the power of ideas, simplicity, reduction and other design philosophies that I still hold true to today. Since then I travelled the world and found myself a life in Sydney, Australia.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm a graphic designer through and through — bloody love it! Nothing gets me going more than a beautiful piece of type, a clever logo, or cheeky bit of negative space. But I suppose things have evolved for me to a slightly higher purpose over the last few years. See, when I was purely a graphic designer I was designing for me — my portfolio, my ego, and my next job. Although I loved it, I wasn't really contributing all that much to the world. Until I found branding.

Branding for me means influence, and that's a powerful thing that we have as creative people. The power to make things better, to inspire whole populations, to change minds, and on occasion change the world. Graphic design is an amazing creative tool to achieve this, but the creative arsenal includes so much more. I believe that words are as powerful as images, ideas are more potent than graphics, and design is a thought process, not something you do on a Mac. As George Lois in 'Art and Copy' said "Creativity has the power to solve anything. Anything!" And so it's the creative people in the world that will solve its problems. It's our duty.

So now I prefer to be known as a creative individual who happens to work in the field of branding. It's a good field because it means my work counts, rather than sitting in a folio waiting for job interviews. It means I can change the opinion of a nation about a company, and it means I can lobby the Australian Government to make Dementia a national health priority. It means I can put my creative skills to use on something that makes a difference.

And I've been lucky enough to win some awards along the way too from the likes of D&AD, AGDA, IDCA, Red Dot, New York Festivals, Type Directors Club, Clio and Desktop.

So please feel free to explore my site. It's an anthology of some of the more interesting projects I've worked on in my 11 years as a designer. There's everything from wedding invites, logos and posters to large rebrands such as for Telstra, and my favourite rebrand for Alzheimer's Australia. That one holds a special place in my heart because that's where we made a real difference.
