My travels to India took me to several regions of the country. I was in awe; how every district/state was amazingly diverse in culture, food, historic architecture, but most of all the people and their passion for traditional Handicrafts. Regardless of religion, philosophy, or economic status, I have always been treated with, warmth & generosity; as a family member rather than a friend. Hundreds of master artisans and their families working their magic as they handcrafted stunning works of art specific to their locale. Techniques which have been mastered & perfected for thousands of years passed down from generation to generation. I have the honor of collaborating with recipients of India's most prestigious Artisan awards, the Shilp Guru and Sant Kabir, presented by the President of India in recognition to masters for their excellence in craftsmanship and valuable contribution to Indian Handicrafts. We discussed, and have brought to fruition a collaboration of traditional and western designs crafted with centuries old techniques. By cutting out corrupt middlemen and local government we achieved a goal that the cottage artisans once believed impossible. Our collective efforts far exceed "fair trade". Together we have coined the phrase "Merit Trade". For the first time in history, the artisans are finally earning what they deserve.
