My relationship to sculpture is rooted in my love of nature and shaped by my fascination with our built world. I am intrigued and by the inherent tensions that lie in the juxtaposition of humans, nature, and technology. My goal is to unite people with one another the landscape and architecture in which we live, work and play, by creating works that energize and spark feelings of connection and pride.
For over twenty years Canneto Studios has proudly formed, and utilized, multi-disciplinary collaborations. Project specific design teams include architects, engineers, fountain, lighting, and landscape designers, fabricators, and foundries. Canneto Studios has been honored by the support of both public and private individuals who are committed to its artistic vision and creative process.
My art and inspiration are drawn from my life’s multifaceted experiences: from the childhood projects in my father's workshop and combing the nearby beaches for fascinating shapes as a small boy, to managing building and bridge construction projects for the United States Steel Corporation as a young man. The most influential experience on my work was perhaps my military service in the US Air Force and Israeli Army.
After experiencing the consequences of war, I decided to dedicate my time and energy to creating works that celebrate life, nature, and the human spirit. In the summer of 1967 I designed my first memorial for victims of Israel’s Six Day War. Since that time I have had the honor of creating art and memorials for individuals, institutions, cities, and states in Europe, the Middle East, Russia, and the United States.
From 1995 to 2010, as Founding Director of ArtSafe, I redefined my personal definition and practice of public art from creating 3 dimensional objects to building creative community collaborations. ArtSafe was a Service Media program. Its grassroots traveling Memorial to Our Lost Children project used non-traditional art making and the creative process to engage diverse segments of Ohio’s citizens. These collaborations included: students and educators, Parents of Murdered Children and prison inmates, law enforcement and health care workers, legislators and the general public. The focus was on creating safe and nurturing communities.
The Memorial to Our Lost Children projects used the arts as a vehicle to bring about healing and violence prevention. Ohio prisons and their inmates, schools, churches, hospitals, merchants, courts and recreation centers used the Memorial and its arts based projects as a vehicle and catalyst for bringing people together. The interactive touring Memorials were built by prison inmates and housed the precious belongings of murdered children. Through hands-on interactive projects community members understood the costs of violence and explored ways to help transform their schools and neighborhoods into safe nurturing environments for children and youth.
From these experiences and the life forces that inexorably bind all things together - I continuously draw assurance, optimism, and inspiration. Read Less
