Graduated with a Cambridge ‘Ordinary’ Level in 1990. After which, I pursued my folks’ advice that becoming an electronic engineer could secure a decent life. Like any other lost boy without a clue of my career path, I was obligated to enlist at the Singapore Armed Forces and served my 2 years’ sentence there.
Upon stepping out from the legalized ‘prison’, I was once again lost like any ex-convict. I enrolled myself at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and graduated with a Diploma in Visual Communications, in 1999. Patience, as I was trained as a soldier, is the key to my achievements. Not great, but a step forward from yesterday. I landed into my 1st agency, Leo Burnett as a studio artist in late 1999 and slowly climbed my way to be a Visualizer, Junior Art Director and Art Director in Fallon. 4 years in Fallon had hone my skills as a better creative. Having the opportunity to work closely with the Minneapolis and the London office made me realized how small I was. So I decided to pack up and get out of my comfort zone and never had I imagined this getaway would turn into a 10-year rollercoaster ride.
Having worked in Dubai on a couple of freelance projects helped me realize that it could only get better. I decided to move on to my next stop, DDB Tokyo. A vibrant city, a virtuoso spread of awesome food, kawaii Japanese girls and a wrong boss made up most of my memories there. Still, it was a great learning experience. I learnt that getting fired didn’t prove my incompetence; just that it wasn’t the right fit for me, for it takes two to tango. After the vibrant city life, I spent another 4 years taking up a bigger challenge as a Creative Director/Executive Creative Director in China. There, I’ve worked with agencies like W+K, Bates, BBH, Ogilvy and BBDO from Shanghai, Beijing to Guangzhou and after that landed myself in Jung von Matt 9 in Hamburg till March 2012. Upon leaving Europe I went taking up various senior freelance positions in Hong Kong and China while doing more personal art projects keeping myself up-to-date. Read Less
