It was whilst working as a chalet host in the French Alps that Al Matthews discovered a penchant for sculpting. This hobby originally came about as a means to entertain the children staying within the accommodation but soon gained notoriety throughout resort.
The artwork produced by Al has its own original identity. He has succeeded in marrying together Animal Biologist knowledge, dexterity with a blade and a vivid imagination to create a unique style.
The result of this hybridisation is Al Mode; a completely organic, trendy and artistic oeuvre. The first movement focuses primarily on animal form and fresh fruits and vegetables lend themselves well to being carved. This led to the discovery of infinite possibilities through shapes, colours and textures (not to mention that many sculptures become recycled healthy ingredients in smoothies and soups!)
In an additional burst of creativity, the names of the produce and animal represented are combined to form a portmanteau, which broaches the educational benefits in the artwork - identification of the items’ names create a riddle for children and adults alike.
The concept evolves with the collaboration of a passionate professional Mauritian wildlife and nature photographer, Stephanie Manuel. The stunning background pictures immerse these “Organimals” into their natural environment, so they can come to life before your eyes! Read Less
