I make art based on color, texture, and subtle/overt vivacity often related to nature and weather. Circles, drop-shapes, wayward ribbons, suns and moons, and “encounters with paint” (swirled blobs, splatters, fragments or cut-outs of dried paint from my palette) are frequent inhabitants of the spaces, speaking an autobiographical, abstract language.

I use oil paint because of the buttery quality and its mineral strength. I like the thickness and versatility – from flat matte grounds to dimensional, sculpted formations and heavy blobs. I like the smell, which triggers memories from my first encounters with paint and my love of the studio.

Drawing is mainly gestural and stream-of-consciousness. Former days of portraiture and figure drawing creep in and guide me -- then suddenly the instrument, my hand, arm, and imagination take over.

I also make water-based and multi-media paintings for immediate satisfaction and the exploration of possibilities (see "Assemblage City"). Paper, drawing fragments, found and dimensional shapes, and collected objects combine with paint to create hybrid material worlds. Read Less
