COMPETENT vs EFFECTIVE DESIGN
Throughout the decade or so spent working with agencies, art departments and freelance clients, Alan was constantly reminded of the universal truth: there is never a single answer to a question and no single discipline works in every instance.
Of course, this begs the question: how does anyone find the right answer when there are so many answers?
In New York alone, there are thousands of designers who can deliver competent answers very quickly by keeping them safely unremarkable. Instead of brainstorming a unique concept, 'safely unremarkable' has become an all too common, go to solution. But if you’re on a shoe string budget and an 8am deadline, it is an answer, just probably not the right one. On the bright side, this sort of work never offended anybody. Of course, that's because no one even noticed it in the first place.
What's that? Oh you do want to be noticed? You want a strong and memorable public facing image? You wanted to Increase visibility and the subsequent earnings potential that comes with it? Then you're ready for effective design.
If your company really wants to be seen and heard, your creative solutions need to stand up and say something. It needs an identity. It takes a particular set of skills to be the designer that delivers not only competent work, but effective work. Competent work takes an array of digital and traditional skills. It takes an understanding of style and trends. That's all very essential. But to take solutions from competent to effective takes a strong conceptual mind, business acumen and the desire to truly understand who your client is.
As a conceptual thinker, Alan has a reputation for quickly drawing connections between unexpected and, seemingly, disparate inspirations. This is the unique brand of clay from which all of his ideas are born. His instincts adeptly sculpt this minutiae into an oddly harmonious and effective whole. Then it’s time to sand and smooth any rough edges with fine grain business acumen. Finally, a sealing coat of long term strategy is applied to ensure your project stands the test of time.
"Alan is a driven and talented designer who is a lot of fun to work with. He contributed significantly to the aesthetic development of Mashwork's (now Canvs) products, and inspired a lot of excellent discussion and development of our application UI and experience.
Alan's deep knowledge of design across a broad range of media is quite astounding, and it is fascinating to see how insights from cinematography or comic book layouts can improve a website's design or the visualizations of an infographic.
It was also great to have a designer who was comfortable working in a variety of aesthetics, from flat minimalism and modern UIs to richly colorful and vibrant graphics. I look forward to seeing Alan's future work, and hopefully working with him again!" — Mattan Ingram, Product Designer at Canvs (formerly Mashwork) Read Less
