A groundbreaking telecom venture founded by business entrepreneur Ehsan Bayat in 2002, Afghan Wireless Communications Company (AWCC) provides cutting-edge mobile and Internet coverage to millions of subscribers in more than 20 regions throughout Afghanistan. Recognized as a driving force behind the nation’s efforts to rebuild infrastructure, Afghan Wireless maintains a targeted focus on improving its already excellent network capabilities by leveraging the most recent advancements in wireless technology on both a small and large scale. Joining forces with the country’s government to promote economic growth and far-reaching social reforms, the company continues to distinguish itself as a highly involved corporate citizen dedicated to facilitating actionable reconstruction endeavors in the Middle East.
Ehsan Bayat established Afghan Wireless shortly after the Taliban regime’s defeat with the assistance of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Communications and resources extended by Telephone Systems International, Inc., an American enterprise he currently leads as President and Chief Executive Officer. A longtime advocate for the Afghani people, Mr. Bayat created the non-profit Bayat Foundation in conjunction with forming Afghan Wireless, an effort meant to support Afghani families left disconnected from the outside world by decades of war. Achieving this aim far more quickly than expected, Mr. Bayat successfully installed a fully operational GSM network in an impressively short period of time and signed a 15-year contract with the Ministry of Communications to ensure Afghan Wireless’ future success as Afghanistan’s top mobile phone provider.
Ehsan Bayat has received numerous accolades for his accomplishments as Afghan Wireless’ founder and Chairman, and for the philanthropic work he undertakes on behalf of the Bayat Foundation. In 2006, Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzi presented Mr. Bayat with a National Human Rights Award in recognition of his valuable contributions to the nation’s populace. Mr. Bayat also boasts distinction as a Mahatma Gandhi Humanitarian Award winner and a recipient of the Canada-Afghanistan Business Council’s Corporate Social Responsibility Award, among many other distinctions.
