Andrew Hyatt

Historic Preservationist, Architectural Historian

New York, NY, USA
Growing up in Pittsburgh, I always lived in old houses. I loved the worn feeling of the floors and door knobs and the magic of stairs that creaked and windows that had wavy glass. Those houses had a personality that I could never find in anything new. Traveling to Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, I would often stop on a quiet country road to photograph a traditional saltbox or Cape Cod style home, dreaming of restoring one and calling it home.

This passion for historic architecture led me to study historic preservation and architectural history at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia. Studying in such a historic city as Savannah provided so many opportunities to study a diverse range of American architectural styles. Following graduation, I found myself in New York City working for a preservation engineering firm that specialized in facade restorations. Although I learned so much about practical construction methods in preservation, I am now looking to pivot my career back towards more historic preservation fields
