I was lucky enough to be given my start by someone who believed in skill and talent over experience and education. In 1989 I was offered a job, through a mutual friend, as assistant to a very successful local Los Angeles swimwear designer (Bikinis by Ziganne). One of my responsibilities was to help him with his catalog, but that wasn't the only design work he'd hired me for.

He wanted to publish a swimwear magazine and asked me to learn everything I needed to know to create a magazine in-house. He purchased the hardware, and the software, and got out of my way. It was the beginning of my career and the job that made me realize this was the career I wanted.

The magazine was, technically, a success, but there were massive creative differences which led to me leaving soon after the first—and only—issue came out. After leaving the swimwear company, I purchased my own equipment and learned everything else there was to learn about my trade. Read Less
