Showcase & Discover Creative Work

Valerie Herrero

Instructor and explorer

Pittsburgh, PA, USA
In these works I am exploring the curiosities of life, how we experience their presence and their passing, and the understanding that can be drawn from these curiosities. The imagery and compositions are an attempt to capture the fleeting nature of sensory experience, the uncertainty of life, and the underlying hope we feel as warm winds sweep through life.

I have only understood life through my senses and ability to ask questions. After this conclusion, a deep appreciation for the human senses, their direct connection with the brain, and the vital role they play in my ability to understand the world around me ensued. I have since begun an exploration of the connections among various elements of nature including insects, plants, and human sensory perception.

Not only do the works serve as a medium for my personal exploration, but also captivate the viewer into a moment in which they can explore the seamless boundaries, complexities, and nature of life and time. Details capture the intricacy of the world around us and ask the viewer to stop and acknowledge the curiosity of life.

The work begins with a delicate organic subject. I explore its qualities, function in life, and the relationships it shares with other forms and ideas. From this, I begin to create a context to place the subject within that shares its elusive quality with the audience. The relationships among the subject matter, the viewer, and the process I partake in precisely embody my internal goal.

My goal is to create a moment, as it might seem in a reverie, a song, a shadow, among the clouds or within the flitting sounds of the moth’s wing, which encompasses a shared explorative experience and conversation with the viewer. The hope is to come to understand the world we live in.
My work is a reflection of the intricacy and gentle balance of life through the bend of the breeze and the flight of the moon’s wind-faring friend.
