Painting MFA Thesis Exhibition "bouquet de dents-de-lions"

May 15, 2015

ATLANTA, GA— Savannah College of Art and Design Painting M.F.A. candidate Savonna Nicole Atkins will exhibit recent work, including painting, textile work, and sculpture in her thesis exhibition "bouquet de dents-de-lions" at Sycamore Place Gallery, 120 Sycamore Place, Decatur, Georgia 30030. The reception will take place on Friday, May 15th, from 7:00pm - 10:00pm. Additionally, the gallery will be open on Saturday, May 16th from 2:00pm - 5:00pm. The reception is free and open to the public.

In her thesis work, Atkins explores the nature of insecurities, the notion of perfection, and the absurdity of ideals. The painting and textile work is obsessively filled with layers of paint and stitching, as each piece attempts to outdo its neighbors. In sculptural work, Atkins playfully flips traditional ideals and highlights the common disconnect between intentions and reality.

Atkins is an emerging painter and mixed-media artist living and working in Atlanta, Georgia. Born in Annapolis, Maryland in 1989, Atkins grew up attending Young People’s Studio classes at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. Atkins later moved to North Carolina to attend the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where in 2011 she received a B.A. in Recreation Therapy with minors in Studio Art and Psychology. Atkins continued her art education in Atlanta, Georgia at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Atlanta. Her work is in the SCAD Savannah and SCAD Hong Kong permanent collections as well as in other private collections.
