Collaborate with reporters and editors to conceptualize, develop, build, launch, enhance and maintain digital news and information products for the newsroom. Examples include interactive maps, a weekly drought update, searchable databases, interactive graphics and charts, and data research and analysis.

Work with reporters to develop data-driven stories, which have included stories about a dormant pipeline that may be reactivated to ship crude oil, California’s prison realignment law and the homeless population, and wealth and poverty along Highway 111. Help grow audience by using analytics data to develop features like the award-winning “10 Picks” series.

Collaborate with newsroom staff to cover news events and topics important to our audience, which have included numerous weather stories, live blogging and shooting video during President Obama’s visits, helping to interview celebrities along the red carpet, and live-streaming the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s annual Awards Gala for our website.

Developed a company-wide social media strategy to increase engagement with our audience and pageviews on our website. Managed and posted content on the U-T’s social media accounts, which included niche social sites like Foursquare and Plurk.

Monitored analytics data and social media metrics, which showed we increased our monthly visits from select social media sites from 65K to 450K. We also grew our combined Twitter followers from 7K to more than 34K, and our combined Facebook fans from fewer than 100 to more than 6K.

Worked with the marketing, advertising and editorial departments to build community connections while promoting the U-T’s brands. Initiatives included a dinner with Chargers reporter Kevin Acee, a Foursquare newspaper giveaway, weekly online chats, and a weekly social media business column.
