Ryan Thompson

Freelance Graphic Designer

Waterloo, WI, USA
My name is Ryan Thompson and I am a recent graduate of the Graphic Design program at UW-Stout. I am currently living and working out of the Rochester, MN area.

I grew up in a small Wisconsin town by the name of Waterloo. Famously known for being home to the world headquarters of Trek Bicycles and Van Holten's Pickles. In coming from a small town, I hold the small things close. Family and friends come before all, closely followed by my art and design of course. Other than that though I'm a pretty normal guy, I love to be outdoors hunting, fishing, or just taking pictures. Im also into sports and really enjoy spending my spare time with friends.

Much of my design is inspired by nature, whether it be the lay of the land and expressing that through line in topographic maps, or through the use of natural materials in my projects. I draw inspiration from all that is around me and love expressing that through my work.

Graphic Design Intern

I was hired as MCD Inc. first graphic design intern and first graphic designer ever. My duties throughout the duration of my internship were to abide and follow a project list while working closely with the sales team and a packaging engineer intern. These various projects were created to help graphically promote the amazing capabilities of MCD through creative applications. This included a Thomas Kinkade style christmas house, a zombie hand mailer, an easter egg gift card holder, a telescopic MCD rebrand postcard, and a specialty coatings guide highlighting the various UV coatings that they offer. Throughout the process of completing these projects I was in close contact with the sales team, the head of estimating, the die room specialist, and the president of the company working to come up with creative solutions to promote their business graphically.

University Of Wisconsin Stout

Graphic Designer

I was hired as a student graphic designer through UW-Stout to work on a project contracted through the school. This company came to UW-Stout in hopes of us conducting the design and the brand of the product. To achieve this I worked closely with the Industrial Design Program Director, Noah Norton, and a senior industrial design student. I got to be involved in the process of the new product being designed and in the meetings with the vendor. My responsibilities as the graphic designer of the project included proposing a name and creating a logo, logo-type, infographics, patterns, and a proposed direction for packaging. I was in very close contact with my team on campus and worked with the board of the company throughout the design process.
