My work is contemporary storytelling executed in drawings and paintings and assemblages, depicting inner meditations, conflicts, and conversations. I think of pure Art as an abstract non-representational entity. However the idea of infusing representational imagery with abstract qualities and pushing the familiar toward an unfamiliar outcome is a major motivation in my creative process. I really enjoy putting disparate things together! To that end, I produce several distinct seemingly divergent types of work. This dichotomy comes from one place; I suppose that alone is my point. Seeing one within the other is the challenge I offer. I have yet to discover what it is that pushes my hands across a surface, still, I question my inspirations and in the process I find openings to an elusive answer.
Many of you visiting here will no doubt already know a bit about me, but for the sake of those who don't I'll reminisce some ... I have been making and selling Artwork since the 1970's. I grew up rather remotely, in the mountains of Southern California, and I began drawing in earnest about the 3rd grade more out of spite and boredom than ambition. Spite, because of a school-yard argument, and boredom because of where I lived. The ambition finally showed up when I realized that if I did really well with my Art I could get out of a foreign language classes in High School! Needless to say, I did have an inherent knack for drawing and almost 40 years later, I'm still at it ... a few years ago I had the marvelous opportunity to return to school and finally get my degree in drawing and painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
I'm not a real fan of labels so you won't find me waiving a flag for one genre or style over another ... That being said, I'm really enjoying oil painting and assemblage/sculpting right now. Over the years I've done my fair share of Western Iconography, Still Life, Landscape, Portraiture, Abstraction, and even Metaphysical work. More recently I've been intrigued by what I like to call New Visions. These are paintings that I work intuitively, responding to my immediate surroundings, dream states, world events, and/or the painting surface itself and the color combinations that happen with each sitting.
As always, I hope that my work is fun if not (or at least!) interesting to look at.
