In a drunken late-night conversation with an old street jazz musician I happened to meet, I was told that there is a place like heaven but its nothing like teachers and priests say; its some kind of wild party with music, dance, wine and beauty that lasts forever. I couldn't help but imagine what a place might be like, and travel there in my imagination, and then the drawings came, like illuminated manuscripts for the "Funky Planet" his words made so real. My parents were both artists- when I was four or five a graffiti covered subway train pulled into the station and I asked my father how the trains were painted. He told me "illegally" but if I really meant to do so when I got bigger I should start practicing now. Despite years of dedication and running great risks, I painted the trains, and achieved some degree of notoriety, but faced with so much supreme talent I never distinguished myself as a master. It is only since adulthood (while my work no longer qualifies as "graffiti") that my hands have learned to create anything that I can be satisfied with, and if others can appreciate it then in some small way the world is a better place.
