1. Vary your schedule. Neighborhood stakeouts are often the method used by home intruders to determine targets. Varying your schedule by a few minutes or hours can sway intruders from targeting your home.

2. Pay attention to neighbors and strangers on your block. Keeping a friendly attitude toward those in your neighborhood gives thieves the impression of a community of neighbors that will look out for another and report suspicious activity.

3. Put an alarm system in place. Alarm systems with lights and sounds may deter intruders from entering your home and can alert neighbors if a break-in occurs. Furthermore, dogs can be trained to bark at intruders.
