I grew up in a family that constantly moved from forgotten town to forgotten town across South Africa. Design never factored into this lifestyle. We were leaves in the wind if you will. It wasn’t a bad life — all of our material needs were covered. But something was definitely missing. Not just from my own life, but from the world around me.

It wasn’t until I started my architecture degree that I realised exactly what that missing thing was. What I discovered in those formative four years was that we didn’t have to accept the world as it was presented to us. I discovered that if something was bad we could make it better. I discovered the power of design.

My name is Tyler Yeo, and I have a dream. I dream of a world where design is used as a remedy for the world’s ills instead of exacerbating them — I’m working on a Master’s in Information Design on exactly this topic.

I’m not only a dreamer though, I’ve got my other foot firmly planted in reality. When I’m not dreaming I’m figuring out practical ways to help us edge nearer to this idealistic goal right now, with what we have today.

Now, instead of drifting from town to town, I move from project to project — exploring ways that I can bring this dream to life. Read Less
