My paintings act as portals. By capturing spatial change, I strive to create art that connects to the viewer’s experience. Ultimately I want to create a doorway that transcends physical confinement. Viewed through the lens of history, I am inspired by the sublime expansive landscape. Here visual effects and installation bring illusion, deception and artifice to the forefront. I use liquid oils to mimic the fluidity and natural effects of crashing waves. Antique 19th century hand artisan frames and spun convex glass transform my canvas into windows of the barren seascape. The tondo format of these antique frames function as vignettes to another time period. I am interested in nostalgia, not of my own personal history, but a collective history made personal to me. Each piece is an investigation of how materiality of paint, history of objects, and illusion collaborate. It is the tension between these three ideas that transforms the role of the object within my work. In this manner the infinite becomes finite, enclosed by it’s own physicality, through the performative aspect of viewing intense manipulation of materials. Read Less
