Creativity, what is it really? cre·a·tiv·i·ty/ˌkrēāˈtivitē/ The dictionary defines it as this - The use of the imagination or original ideas, esp. in the production of an artistic work.

What do I, as a designer, future architect, whatever someone may like to call me at this point in my academic career, think of creativity? I am starting to believe that creativity has more to do with how a person thinks, views, and experiences life and processes information rather than their ability to draw or paint well.

But you don’t need to have a genius level intellect to demonstrate creativity. Sometimes it’s about being clever and noticing what is around you and realizing that you can do something with what you see, hear, think, and feel.

Why I went into the design field and more specifically Architecture/Interior Architecture/Adaptive Reuse wasn't because of the long nights and model making, but because I wanted to use my creativity to positively effect someone's life. I want to create a space, a building, an object, an event, plan or website to improve the status of the person who would be my client. It is a fact that a human being's surrounding environment influences their thoughts, feelings, and actions. I want to be a positive influence in that process.

I am all about experiences. An experience makes up a person, and the more they have, and the more well rounded they are, the better quality of life I believe they can have. My experiences have grown throughout my life, first as living in a rural area coming from a farm community in Nebraska, then moving on to two prestigious colleges that allowed me to have the freedom to explore all opportunities including three study abroad experiences. And now? Now I am moving forward to a new chapter where I would like to explore even more my design abilities and further research into adaptive reuse and sustainability. Read Less

What has really pushed me towards a simpler, leaner way of life was helping to plan and build a village in Ecuador along one of the Amazon tributaries in the Napo River Valley. Their way of life, sustainable living, and respect for nature really was a turning point on my social service and local community living. Studying in Ireland was another eye opener to other cultures, and it just added to my craving to experience other ways of life! Copenhagen allowed me to learn about multiple aspects of Scandinavian design and also travel and experience how they really do design for every day life. They design for the every day person, with every day needs, and they start with the flowing with the landscape, staying with the urban context, then working down to building scale, and eventually even down to a chair or plate.

Whether it is from working for AmeriCorps, a volunteer government grant program that helps people in need, designing smart, or shopping at the Farmer's Market and using cloth bags and cfl light bulbs , recycling, or even reducing my trash every little thing counts. In the past, I worked with the Health Department to promote Cleaner Greener living in Lincoln and the state of Nebraska as a whole. This work, along with the smart design I am learning in Architecture will help me in succeed in the future, and help give us a better future for my kids and grandkids. Read Less
