Julian Hibbard

New York, NY, USA

Julian Hibbard is an English fine art photographer and published author.

Drawn to the camera as a medium by which to probe the spectrum of human experience, his enigmatic images frequently involve a correlation between time, spectatorship and the nature of exile and desire.

In his photography he often stages moments that maintain a tension between the real and the imagined, producing contradictory feelings. The inspiration for such images is a mixture of conscious and unconscious elements including memories real or inherited and emotional reactions triggered by objects or a sense of place.

Julian's photographic journey began in 1992 at Kingston University in London where he studied Intermedia Fine Art. His award winning images have since been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Scotland, Santiago de Chile and at the prestigious Fundación RAC Gallery in Spain.

Julian has also turned his images into books and art objects that break with convention and explore a different sort of visual narrative. The resulting hybrid often taps an idea of memory, language, learning and nostalgia.

His first book - "The Noir A-Z" - a visual alphabet of twenty-six graphic incidents to accompany dominant terms from the noir universe, was published in 2009. In the book word and image come together in stories the viewer must tell - stories the viewer discovers, invents or suffers as the relationships between word and image is discerned.

A second title - "Schematics: A Love Story" - a unique and experimental board book that pairs found scientific line graphics with simple prose to form a narrative language in which life is mapped, charted and diagramed - was released in 2011.

His books and limited edition art objects have been sold at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Whitney, The International Center of Photography (ICP), Artware Editions (NYC) and Colette (Paris).
