Since her adolescence, Alina Smolyansky had been a capable artist, dedicated to watercolour painting and writing. However, in recent years, after a career in engineering, she started looking for more meaning, both in her life and her art. This search brought her to an icon-painting class of Vladimir Blagonadezhdin.
Now Alina paints in the traditional egg tempera technique, known for its luminosity and long history. Her works are in private collections in Canada, the USA, Germany and Thailand and have been exhibited in Victoria, Vancouver and Germany.
She expresses her mission as an artist in the following words: “If my paintings make at least one person aspire to spirituality, then I would say that my career as an artist has been successful.” Read Less

Duration: 20 hours

In this introductory course, you will discover the basic secrets of the ancient technique of egg tempera painting and will receive personal instruction and demonstration for each stage of painting (mixing egg yolk emulsion, the “puddle” and brushstroke techniques, transparent layering).

At the end of the course you will take home a completed painting, inspired by illuminated manuscripts and oriental art.

No previous experience required. All the necessary materials and tools will be provided.

You will discover the basic secrets of the ancient technique of icon painting and will receive personal instruction and demonstration for each stage of painting:

· transferring the image and applying gold leaf,
· mixing egg yolk emulsion,
· the “little lake” and brush stroke techniques,
· transparent layering,
· varnishing the finished icon.

At the end of the course you will take home a completed icon of an archangel or Mary with the Child. (Please click here to view the “Students’ Projects” page)
- Private and small group lessons (2-3 students)
- Host an icon-painting workshop at your church or group. Discount for groups of 4 and more (max. 6)
