The graduation project marks an end to the theoretical learning journey and teaches an amalgamation of theory into practice. It is a platform to achieve great learning and gain exposure to the design industry.

A graduating student of the textile design discipline at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), completes their four years of academic learning by working as a designer in the textile profession.

The project commences with organization/company selection which sponsors a student for carrying out the graduation project there, developing a minimum of two collections for the sponsoring company. This is an excellent opportunity to make use of the creative skills and knowledge of fashion and textiles acquired at NIFT.

On the basis of the briefing given by the sponsoring company, the collections are developed based on research and requirements.

Dark side of the Moon- when the moon looks away and the stars come out to play. The stars come together and create their own unique rhythm. This project is an attempt to search for those lost rhythms in the clear night sky. The approach is simple, to focus on each star and connect those dots to uncover the constellations of rhythms.

Under this project two main rhythms were uncovered. The first rhythm, Star Struckk, was uncovered under layers of explorations but once uncovered it spread a feeling of euphoria in the entire sky with its geometric and psychedelic look. The second rhythm however, White Night, was connected and suspended in the white sky.

These rhythms were then translated onto fabric to develop lifestyle products. Their aim is reach out to the entire milky way living on the dark side of the moon.

It’s not always dark on the Dark side of the Moon!

Craftsworld is a web portal that aims to promote cultural curiosity among the people by directly providing the artisans with a global market place. By doing this it hopes to expand and diversify the audience that understands and appreciates handcrafted products.
On the bigger picture it not only aims to improve the economic condition of the people currently working in this sector but it also hopes to encorage the future generations to get involved in this sector.
Since there is minimal use of renewable resources in the production of handmade products, the main source of energy being man, typically they have a low carbon footprint and promote the use of locally available materials as well as natural and organic materials where possible.

Education

National Institute Of Fashion Technology

Bachelor of Design - Textile Design

The Textile design course gave me a very detailed understanding of taking the fiber to fashion. Along with on campus learning it also provided us with oppotunities to learn through:

Craft Survey and Documentation: As part of the Craft Cluster initiative of NIFT, students undertake field visits to closely interact and work with craftsmen to add value to their products.

Educational Visits: Students frequently visit industrial units to integrate theory with practice. They also visit museums, art galleries, exhibitions, and trade fairs to keep abreast with latest fashion trends.

Industry Internship: Students intern for six to eight weeks to understand the structural and functional constituents of the industry. During the internship, students learn to adapt to real industry situations and are assigned practical projects, which equip them for decision-making in a realistic environment. The internship also helps strengthen the relationship between industry and students.

Graduation Project: The graduation project undertaken by students encapsulates the various skills imbibed during the course of study. The industry-sponsored project provides a challenging platform for students to extend and demonstrate academic learning.
