Jay Wing

High School Art & DesignTeacher

San Diego, CA, USA
I've worked in the Graphics industry for 30 years. I've done everything from prepress production to animation, Cartooning, Graphic Design, Art Direction, and worked in virtually every print medium. In 2003, I returned to school to earn a Single Subject Teaching Credential and a Masters in Education.

I've become passionate about teaching high school students the rudiments of Art, Design, and how these have relevance in seemingly unrelated fields. I continue to supplement my newfound passion with design and Illustration work, and share the experiences with my students, modeling the desired outcomes for them.

Work Experience

San Diego Unified School District

Substitute Teacher

After the Principal moved from one school to another, the in-coming Principal decided there was no need for continuing the classes I facilitated, so I added my name to the "Visiting Teacher" list and have substituted and provided freelance clients with a variety of work. That's an understatement; the substitute teaching varies every day, as I accept every assignment, from Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Kearny High School

Art & Design Teacher

The website, CaptivArting.com, is a work-in-progress, which I use in my classroom, both as a way to communicate expectations, and show samples of assignments. The site has changed several times in the past three years, as I've taught Digital Art, Visual Art & Design, and most recently, Design in Mixed Media (a hands-on fine art class).

San Diego Unified School District

Substitute Teacher

Most of the substitute work I did was for several teachers at Poway High School's Art Department, although I did have many occasions of subbing at everything from preschool to high school. The subjects varied every day.

Westview High School

Student Teacher

I include this on my Work Experience because, though I wasn't paid, my Student Teaching work was one of the most intense periods of my career. The website listed is of all the Visual Arts classes provided on the campus of Westview High School. I was fortunate enough to be mentored by one of the best teachers I've ever had, in Keith Opstad. The class was a Drawing & Painting class, the first I'd been involved in since college in 1983.
January 2009 - June 2009 San Diego, California, United States

Southwest Strategies, LLC

Project Manager and Graphic Designer

I was hired as a liaison between the Graphics Department and the Account Managers. I tracked the jobs and reported to the President of Southwest Strategies, on how various work was progressing. I kept a spreadsheet, updated daily, to track all the work, attended meetings with Account Executives, and worked alongside the Art Director and other Designers, communicating expectations. When time permitted, I also provided Graphics support, in the form of logo designs, brochures, website interfaces, etc.

National University

Masters in Education

The courseware for the Masters program at National University runs concurrently and overlaps in so many ways with the Teaching Credential that the most logical thing is to achieve both at the same time. There was a gap in my education from September 2005 to January 2009, as I accepted a full-time job as the Project Manager at Southwest Strategies during that period.
July 2003 - September 2009 San Diego, California, United States

National University

Single Subject Teaching Credential, Fine Art

I attended National University on a full-time basis from July 2003 to September 2005, completing all the in-class training, leaving only my student teaching to perform. A three year gap in my education was due to accepting a full-time salaried position with Southwest Strategies, from September 2005 to October 2008. I resumed my studies and completed all the necessary courseware in September 2009.
