Dave Saunders

Visual Arts Specialist (Multimedia)

Northampton, United Kingdom
I am an energetic and creative individual commanding a broad mix of digital, music, workshop and arts skills and a passion for my subject area. Since graduating in 2004 I have engaged in a variety of freelance opportunities and have experience in delivering stylistically diverse private and commercial projects. I am recognized amongst colleagues for my interpersonal skills, passion, ‘can do’ attitude and ability to deliver innovative solutions. I have always sought creative challenges to allow me to further develop and expand on my skills and experience and whilst studying for my postgraduate diploma in Multimedia began to cultivate an interest in Arts and Health intersections, eventually seeking employment with St Andrew’s Occupational Therapy department to further explore this.

Outside of the work environment some of my interests include: Reading, Illustration, Photography, Sculpture, Woodwork, Gaming (board and computer), Aikido, Runework, Camping and Music. I am able to play: Bass, Guitar, Trumpet and Piano to varying degrees, write and perform my own songs and also craft more abstract compositions using field and Binaural recordings.

Technical Instructor - Media Production Skills

Since joining St Andrew’s in 2009 I have fulfilled the role of Technical Instructor across a number of areas whilst also successfully creating the unique Media Production Skills (MPS) service. This service works within an Occupational Therapy framework to engage service users across pathways in bespoke project based work, supporting self-expression, personal and vocational skill acquisition and fostering an understanding of modern communications media across the mediums of; Graphic Design, Film, Photography, Coding, Audio production, Animation, 3D Design.

Beginning with a ward based intervention in 2010 I have owned and evolved this service taking over fulltime management and delivery in 2013. Since this projects inception I have also diligently attended to its research and evidential aspects and also engaged in cross disciplinary projects with psychology and speech and language therapy. During 2015 MPS offered 1057 contact hrs with a 69% attendance, expanded to include other pathways and activities and became part of the Visual Arts arm of the Arts@StAndrew's.

Developing MPS has given me valuable experience in service development, implementing individual and site-wide projects whilst also evidencing the service, unique within the UK health secotr. St Andrew’s profile has subsequently been raised by this activity and through my delivery of case studies and best practice guidelines at conferences, CPD events, interviews and articles to external healthcare professionals and sites within the charity. I have delivered training internally to colleagues in association with award winning company ‘Animation Therapy’ and, through the continued cultivation of this positive business relationship, ensured that St Andrew’s was used as the site for the first research paper into using Animation within a forensic healthcare setting in 2013.
