SELECTED EXPERIENCE
Newspaper and Collateral Material
Creative direction, page layout, pre-press
Lacking consistency and a cohesive design, Jewish News, a bimonthly tabloid newspaper, was unappealing to readers and unattractive to advertisers. I worked with the existing format for several months to learn the strengths, weaknesses and problems of the publication and then began a complete redesign, developing a basic grid system that would be flexible, attractive and allow the paper to use standard tabloid ad formats. I developed master layouts and typographic styles for various sections and created specifications for numerous body and headline formats. The redesign was very successful and the paper continues to improve visually with each issue, production runs smoothly, delivery is on time and advertising revenues have increased.

Book Design (various clients)
Cover and interior design, photo editing, production
Having designed more than thirty illustrated books, I am experienced working closely with publishers, editors, clients and printers. Titles cover a wide range of subject matter including artist’s monographs, shipwrecks, a surgical atlas, autobiography, history and entertainment. My work includes initial concept, cover and page design, photo and illustration selection, typography, writing and evaluation printing specifications, correction and approval of proofs and press checks. Clients include publishers (Aperture, Bulfinch Press, W.W. Norton), museums (Chrysler Museum of Art, The Mariners’ Museum), foundations and individuals.
Medical journal (Sentara Norfolk General Hospital)
Art direction, design, layout
FORUM, a quarterly magazine tailored to the professional’s interests, focuses on breakthroughs and advancements in the science and technology of medicine taking place in the Hampton Roads area.

Annual Reports (YMCA of South Hampton Roads)
Creative/art direction, design, photo editing, production
YMCA annual reports are designed to be to be much more than a record of the year’s accomplishments. Each report is a timeless package detailing the abundance of program highlights and inspirational gems of life. I created a fitness calendar to maintain the YMCA’s visibility year-round, concentrated several marketing efforts to position the YMCA as a fitness leader in the community, and contributed to the promotion of new FitLinxx and interactive fitness technology. Working from concept to art direction through production, I have provided the YMCA with a high-visibility and high-impact materials that stimulate membership and drive contributions.

Catalogues, Brochures, Announcements (Chrysler Museum of Art)
Creative/art direction, design, production
Each exhibition—Warhol to Rembrandt, Neo-Classical sculpture to Civil War photography—is given a distinct theme and visual identity, creating excitement and interest in the community and bringing in visitors. Working with curators, artists and editors, these materials are designed to communicate the artistic and historical concepts chosen by the institution to the public. I have complete responsibility for all concepts, art direction, photo shoots, design, production and delivery.

Exhibition Graphics (Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk Public Library)
Creative direction, design, production
Ranging from simple text labels to complex large-scale multiple-image panels for numerous temporary and permanent exhibitions, these graphics are designed to convey complex information and concepts clearly, excite and enliven the presentation, and enhance the visitor’s experience. I have also created logos and identity campaigns used to promote these and other exhibitions.

Photo Library, Brochures, Ads, Direct Mail (Spirit Cruises)
Art direction, photo editing, design, production
Operating in seven locations, Spirit Cruises needed materials that would provide a consistent brand image while promoting a city-specific product. To develop a library of photography suitable for all venues, I produced and directed photo shoots depicting events including proms, senior cruises, singles parties, holiday celebrations and mother’s day. Focusing on the harbor cruise experience, these images perfectly complimented existing city-specific material and were used extensively in marketing and advertising. In addition, I designed and produced numerous brochures, mailers and advertisements.

Products, Packaging, Advertising (Decipher, Inc)
Graphic design, art direction, photo retouching, production
Before this company became a highly respected international company, I was invited to lend a hand with promotions and artwork for a small golden jigsaw puzzle with a $100,000 prize. Being part of the original creative team under the direction of a visionary CEO, I delivered. My efforts were rewarded with a long-term free-lance relationship, working with the in-house design team, which led to multiple assignments within the overall development of the Star Trek® and Star Wars® Customizable Card Games. I supervised print production in Belgium, a highly skilled and technical process; designed game cards, catalogs, advertisements, sell sheets, and packaging; and directed photo shoots.

Identity, Advertising, Collateral (Orka Architectural Art Glass)
Art direction, design, production
A comprehensive identity campaign of logo development, sales brochures, advertisements, presentation material and web site design played a key role in positioning this start up company as a leader in its field. The company has been able to subsequently promote an elegant sophisticated look that parallels the delicate beauty of their carved glass. My expertise with photo direction and start-to-finish production played an integral role with responsiveness to the client’s needs for the rapid implementation of the new identity/marketing campaign.

Identity, Advertising, Collateral (Artifax and Simply Selma’s)
Art direction, design, photography, production
My challenge was to create and maintain identity campaigns and advertising for two very similar and competing gift boutiques. Located across the street from each other, these two stores needed unique definition and differing images. By carefully positioning each business my campaigns invite competition and avoid confusion while attracting customer traffic for each. With discretion at a premium, the community at large would have no way of detecting the behind-the-scenes strategy working to magnify each store’s respective features.
