Claiming Masculinity emerged as an anti-bias work, bringing greater visibility to nontraditionally masculine individuals. The series questions the binarisims and other assumptions embedded in Western thinking about what constitutes "sex," "gender," and "cultural norms." Participants in the Claiming Masculinity Project have lent voice, place, and worth to an evolution of thinking, via this early exhibit. I extend my gratitude to each of them.

The Art of Scars portfolio represented here only in part, developed from my work with survivors of trauma and life upheaval, who asked to be seen differently.

Some of us have had enough decay and brutality, in our lives: we live that. What we would like to celebrate are those few moments, when beauty can be held, viewed, made real in our lives.

Engaging beauty within madness, amidst pain, engendering delicacy from the brutality of unrelenting violence, discord, poverty, strife—this is the art of bearing and witnessing scars

while continuing to see

and be seen.

Read Less
