Debbie Cohn says that she has always admired people who have made public service a career choice. As a law student she studied trademark law, and when a job as a trademark examining attorney opened up at the United States Patent and Trademark Office soon after she got her degree, she interviewed for it and was hired. She has been with the USPTO ever since, and from 2010 until her retirement was its Commissioner for Trademarks. Read Less

Debbie Cohn has more than thirty years of experience with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. She joined the agency right out of law school in 1983 as a trademark examining attorney, and rose through the ranks to become its Commissioner for Trademarks, a post she held until her retirement. She holds a degree in psychology from The American University and did graduate work in that field at City University of New York. She received her law degree from the George Mason University School of Law in 1982. Read Less

She oversaw all aspects of the USPTO's Trademarks organization, including policy, operations, and budget. She played a key role in developing and implementing the USPTO's telework program, which she helped to establish in 1997.
