One of the leading emerging designers in Australia, David began his career in Milan in 2000 after graduating from the University of South Australia. Initially moving to Europe to complete a Masters of Automotive Design in the UK, David decided to remain in Milan in order to explore a more diversified approach to design. After a brief stint as graphic artist at Mondadori publishing house, David was given an oppurtunity to work with British designer George Sowden of the renowned Memphis design movement of 1980’s. During his time with Sowden in Milan he also collaborated with designer Jerszy Seymour, whom he assisted with several exhibitions both in Milan and Paris.
David moved to Paris in mid 2003 to work in the studio of Marc Newson working with brands such as Qantas, Dom Perignon, Nike and Samsonite. In mid 2007 he returned to Australia seeking to augment his design understanding, delving into the world of interior design by taking on the role of Design Leader for prestigious international architectural firm Woods Bagot. During his two years as Interior Design Leader for Woods Bagot, David continued to broaden his horizons by continuing to explore personal projects and featuring as a Design Ambassador for 2008’s Saturday in Design in Melbourne. He was also featured as one of Australia’s top ten emerging designers by DQ magazine.
During 2009, David left Woods Bagot to work full time on his studio projects, establishing David Caon Studio in Sydney’s Surry Hills. He has continued his long standing association with iconic Australian brands like Qantas both independently and under colaboration with Marc Newson Limited in London. David’s design for Qantas’ International Business Class Lounge furniture has been highlighted in various travel publications and will soon be made available for retail.
Additionally David has exhibited numerous times with the Workshopped exhibition during Sydney Design week as well as completing several collaborative design exhibitions for ‘The Project’ during Saturday InDesign, including a bespoke design for Italian lighting giant Artemide. David has been a featured speaker for designEX, the Authentic Design Alliance and has presented his design process at the Powerhouse Museum during Sydney Design Week. David was awarded by the Retail Design Institute for his design for the Audio Technica Soundscape Sofa at the 2011 Design Awards. Read Less
