Chanel Zhulin Shi recently received a master's degree in industrial design from Pratt Institute. She holds a Master’s Degree in Industrial Design Engineering, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design from Zhejiang University, ranked top 3 in China. Chanel was born in a beautiful city - Hangzhou, China. Chanel’s design, “Seattoo,” has achieved the 2011 Red Dot Concept Award. She holds 12 published utility model patents in China. During her childhood, she had many opportunities for art exploration, such as dance, painting, and playing the piano. Eventually she entered a high school dedicated to the visual arts, where she trained in various artistic techniques. Chanel’s design philosophy is making people happy in their lives.
During Chanel’s college career, she spent time as an exchange student at both the National University of Singapore (2009) and at the University of California, Davis (2011). During her stay at UCD,she studied interior design, graphic design, and choreography. Such exposure to these fields gave her abroad understanding of different skills and experiences to draw on. She is adept at Integration Design, which is integrating well, design, technology and business.
As a graduate, Chanel launched a brand named Echo ZJU in 2012, which is a Zhejiang University souvenir company. She led the Entrepreneurial Team through various product development projects, such as wallet, iPad case, t-shirt, shopping bag, post card. During that time, she gained rich experience from different perspectives, such as marketing, communicating, and collaborating with factories in China. During her graduate studies in industrial design engineering in Zhejiang University, she focused on shoe design with wearable technology. Her master’s thesis concentrated on shoe design and the use of the form of movement and natural metaphors to illustrate the beauty and meaning of art, through the technology of sensors and human-computer interaction. In the process of shoe making, 3d scanning, 3d printing and silicon casting skills have been applied.
From 2013, Chanel has been pursuing a Master’s Degree in Industrial Design at Pratt Institute to further tap into her design potential, specifically in luxury fashion accessories. At Pratt, Chanel has been focusing on footwear design, small leather goods design, handbag design, Jewelry design, from concept, construction, materials, color, to flexibility. Two of her bag designs have been published in a book, Creative Bags. Her bag design, “TransformationShopping Bag,” won the most popular bag design in the crowdfunding of BetaBrand. Chanel Shi Shoe has been featured in fashion gallery on Behance, which is widely beloved by thousands of users worldwide.
In Fall 2014, Chanel interned in the Shoe Design Department at the world’s famous luxury brand, Marc Jacobs, where she worked in a cutting-edge and high-speed fashion design atmosphere. She did a lot of research and assisted the designers by handling inspiration images,prototypes, materials, presenting colors, trends, communicating with different shoe rental companies to confirm and send the rental shoes, correcting fashion week shoe samples physically. In Spring 2015, she worked as a wearable product design intern at the Perceptual Computing Group, Intel Asian-Pacific Research and Development Ltd in Shanghai. She has researched and designed several innovative devices with Real Sense Tech and a future wearable product: “Batman Virtual Reality Glass,” which is made of leather and plastic. From Fall 2015 to the present, she have worked as a Research Assistant at Pratt Institute Digital Arts and Humanities ResearchCenter. She gave various presentations in meetings and exhibitions by researching design concepts, and collaborating with experienced researchers and professionals. In May 2016, She produced a "Sense Sound" workshop collaborating with Spotify and musicians, which is integrated with her costume design and prop design.
From January 2016, Chanel has launched her SHI-ISH Workshop in Manhattan, New York. She has held eight of Accessories Design Workshops, which are critically acclaimed by students. Chanel feels it is joyful and meaningful to teach students and make them happy to learn, to create, to reinvigorate the material.
Chanel is eager to find a place where she can create new accessories designs, and share them to make the broadest in the fashion world.
