Benjamin (Ben) Barrone began his post-secondary education at Western Michigan University, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) while majoring in Accounting and achieving minors in both Economics and General Business Studies. Distinguishing himself academically, he went on to earn a Master of Science in Accounting (MSA) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). After graduating in 2008, Benjamin Barrone served as a member of the audit staff at Plante Moran. Over nearly five years at Plante Moran his responsibilities included preparing financial statements, building technical audit skills, and developing junior staff members. For the last three of these years he served in the In-Charge (Senior) role in which he performed audits of complex clients, conducted database analyses, and produced training materials for audit staff.
In 2013, Mr. Barrone took a position as Senior Accountant with LaSalle Investment Management, a Canadian co-mingled real estate fund. There, he was responsible for all accounting and financial reporting needs and also developed a reputation for introducing and successfully executing efficiency initiatives. After leaving the firm in 2015, he joined Levy Restaurants as Regional Controller, a position in which he played an integral role in the development of a corporate-level budget, among other responsibilities. Since 2016, he has worked as a M&A and accounting consultant for a confidential Midwest manufacturing and distribution company, preparing the firm for its eventual sale.
Ben then brought this passion and skillset to the startup world and really found his niche. In his role at Vital Proteins he built the accounting and finance functions from scratch to meet the needs of a rapidly-growing company. Additionally, serving on the company's leadership team allowed him to provide important financial insight and goals into the strategic direction of the company.
A particularly rewarding experience was leading the company's efforts to find a strategic business partner and secure Vital Proteins' first (Series A) financing round in October of 2017. Through this process Mr. Barrone gained valuable experience in negotiating the finer points of equity financing, working through legal and tax obstacles, and safeguarding the best interests of the company and its' founders.
Outside of his professional life, Mr. Barrone pursues a passion for golf. A former high school golfer, he caddied during high school and college. Currently, he maintains an official handicap of 5.3 and is eager to improve his game in the coming 2017 season. He enjoys playing public courses throughout the Chicagoland area and also finding opportunities to play in Michigan, where he was raised and grew to love the game. Read Less
